BRIGHT FUTURES NEWS (cont...)

  • University of Southampton - 'Student Works'

Bright Futures would like to welcome a newly ratified society at the University of Southampton this month; ‘Student Works’! Due to Student Union regulations, they are unable to incorporate ‘Bright Futures’ in their society title, however they are very much affiliated with Bright Futures and are Bright Futures at heart and in origin!

Congratulations to Thomas Slide and to his committee for all their hard work.

  • Manchester, Nottingham and UCLAN ratification update

Manchester, Nottingham and UCLAN have all submitted their proposals for ratification this month. All three are awaiting official acknowledgment from their universities so that Bright Futures on-campus activity can commence! All three societies are running really well and gaining more and more members by the day!

Fantastic job Philip, Hannah, Elie and your committees!

  • University of Queen Mary, London

After attending the Bright Futures ‘Foundations For Success’ Event in January this year, Tobias Richter has now established a Bright Futures at his university; Queen Mary, London. The committee have affiliated their Bright Futures society with the existing business society, which already has an established membership base of 750+ students. Bright Futures has been granted autonomy for the organisation of all of their collaborative events, which means that the sky’s the limit for this brand new Bright Futures society!

Excellent progress Tobias!

  • Potential Societies!!!

This month alone, requests have come in from students at Cardiff, UWIC, Starthclyde, Portsmouth, Leeds Met, Greenwich, Surrey, Derby, Middlesex and Durham regarding starting up a new Bright Futures society at these universities… so watch this space!

SOCIETY NEWS (cont...)

  • Lancaster Bright Futures
It’s a bright start for Lancaster Bright Futures!

Celebrating their 1st anniversary, Lancaster Bright Futures offered much more to their student members than just a celebration.
In March 2009, Society Relationship Manager, Eve Hyland, attended the consistently highly-ranked Lancaster University Management School to host a presentation for some of the University’s keenest students who are seeking opportunities to further themselves and gain the skills necessary to compete for graduate careers.
Around 60 students attended the event and received information regarding where to find opportunities, applications and CV’s, interviews and telephone interviews, assessment days and the general attitude to portray when meeting potential employers in both networking and interview situations.

After the presentation, Eve spoke to students in the informal environment the society offered, with refreshments provided for attendees and the opportunity to meet new friends and socialise before heading to a local nightclub to celebrate the society’s first successful year. Much of Lancaster Bright Futures success this year is accredited to the consistent efforts of the Executive team to provide regular and varied events such as L’Oréal Brandstorm and the annual Dinner with Industry, whilst emphasising the need to be ‘well-rounded’ by making time for fun and friends as well as gaining a good degree.

  • Swansea Bright Futures

Swansea University Bright Futures Society had its flagship event this month; ‘Dinner With Industry.’ This turned out to be an extremely successful event… with 60 students attending, and 37 company representatives. We had talks from ExpIndia, SUBiz, and our sponsors in the University, the Dragon Innovation Partnership. We also had the Young Entrepreneur of the year do a talk in which everyone found really inspiring.
All students and corporate representatives had a fantastic night, and the ice breaker we did along with the speed networking between courses worked better than we ever imagined it would.

A successful evening. I had the chance to talk to many students and to introduce them to ExpIndia. The format allowed for a good number of meetings, whilst also keeping it informal and unrushed. I thought it worked very well.” (Tim Phillis - Expindia)

We raised several hundred pounds for Macmillan Cancer Care, thanks to the companies who donated raffle prizes. These included KPMG, GradIntel, Swansea Alumni, Tesco, Enterprise Rent-A-Car, RateMyPlacement, Coors Brewers, and IBM.
Through the event we have had more students join our Bright Futures society, and we have had a huge response from enthusiastic students who are interested in being part of the committee next year.

  • Manchester Bright Futures

Despite initially struggling to get ratified and recognised as a legitimate society, the last few weeks have been extremely successful... After putting together and extensive proposal highlighting our aims and goals, we met with the Careers Service who gave us their complete backing and support. They were very interested in how Bright Futures could assist in reaching the best graduates the university has to offer. In turn they gave us various contact addresses of events organisers within the Careers Service, who would be able to work with us in the future. We have thus swiftly submitted the society proposal and hope to hear back from the Student Union in the next few weeks.
We have a committee made up of five members and various students have registered their interest online or to ourselves in person. In the next few months we hope to be able to re establish the good network of contacts we already have, as well as recruiting more committee members to hand the society over to for next year.

  • NU Futures
    (Nottingham University Bright Futures Society)

This month sees the NU futures soc really getting off the ground… following our participation in the HBOS and Coors Webinars we have managed to arrange two ‘Day in the Life of…’ events; one with Rolls Royce and one with Unilever – not bad going considering we’ve only started the society about a month ago and as of yet are running without any funding! We are awaiting ratification and if all goes to plan, we will be ratified by the end of April – fingers crossed!
We recently kicked off activity with a Facebook group and within a week had 270 members and currently have just under 350. Getting these people to actually go through the process of signing up and attending the events is a different matter however and we are working on initiatives to ensure people are visiting the national website and gaining their official member status.
So all is looking on the up right now and we hope to launch the society officially this coming September with kick-off at Freshers’ Fayre and a launch presentation. However, there is a lot to be done before the society is operating in full swing, so we’d better be getting on with it…!

  • Essex Futures

As their events calendar draws to a close, Essex Bright Futures is beginning to pave the way for an even better year in 2009/10...

Having hosted 9 events with over 11 corporate guests, all within the space of 2 and half months, it is no wonder Essex Bright Futures is storming into next year been branded as ‘the fastest growing society on campus.'

Essex Bright Futures have claimed 54 paid memberships since January 2009, over 200 students on their mailing list and have already received offers from 7 different corporates to host events in the next academic year. The society is well known for its fantastic range of skills events for all disciplines, not least for its growing attendance rates which are noticed by all. The committee comments, “We started off with around 30 people at our launch event, then we saw numbers drop to disheartening levels – however our last two events presented by RateMyPlacement and Pricewaterhouse Coopers have had in excess of 60 attendees at each!”

Plans for the next academic year are already in full swing with the AGM planned after the Easter break, as well as some great ideas for environmentally friendly merchandise, the winter term card, day trips for members and much more!
