Never has a new Bright Futures Corporate Investor been so quick to embrace the values of our society and get stuck-in. Within a week of signing up to work with us Kathryn had already (perhaps foolishly) agreed to run not one but two of our Committee Training workshops, one in Manchester and one in London.
The feedback I received from both the students and other Investors’ that were involved in these workshops was fantastic, with more than one stating that they were the best of the day. I didn’t see any money changing hands so can only assume they were telling the truth. She was later responsible for inventing Chunky KitKat Jenga, but that’s another story…
Standard Life is a major asset managing company with its headquarters in Edinburgh. They provide life assurance and pensions, investment management, banking and healthcare insurance products to millions of customers around the world and offer a wide range of graduate programmes and summer internships.

(Kathryn and the Graduate Recruitment team worked very hard on this website, so make sure you all go and take a look!).

We know that time is precious for final year students. They have application deadlines and assignment deadlines as well as trying to fit in time to attend employer presentations and skills workshops. This is why ACCA have produced a video of our graduate presentation.
Students are able to watch our presentation at a time and place that suits them, ensuring that they have all the information they need about careers in accountancy.
Commercial Awareness Podcasts
I'd like to remind you about the resources that ACCA have developed around commercial awareness. As well as producing 5 podcasts that look at commercial awareness in the different sectors (financial, practice, public and corporate), we've also produced a range of support materials including the impact of interest rates on the economy, risk management and important terminology.

We’re one of the UK's best known high street banks.
But we're also much more than that; we are a hugely diverse financial services company with around 150,000 employees in more than 50 countries across Europe, USA, Africa and Asia. This has already helped to make us one of the ten largest banks in the world. Now, we are focused on breaking into the top five.
If there's one quality that’s fuelled Barclays’ success it’s our innovation. Our people inspire groundbreaking ideas that move the entire industry forward. Whether it’s reaching untapped markets, capitalising on the latest technology, launching futuristic new retail bank branches or introducing imaginative products like the carbon-neutral debit card, we always seem to get there first. Not surprisingly our fresh-thinking approach also makes us an inspirational place to develop a graduate career.
In 2010 we're looking to recruit around 150 graduates across our business areas of Commercial Bank, Retail Bank, Barclaycard, Marketing and Products, Technology, HR, Tax, Treasury and Finance. Each business runs its own structured training programme lasting between 1-3 years. Wherever you join us we’ll push you to push us, for more details please visit our website at: www.inspiredbybarclays.com

On the road with Standard Life...
With more dates than a Madonna tour, we are all geared up for the autumn term of events. An HR consultant mans our stands as well as a team of graduate reps. It's a different mix of people at each fair. It's essential that they all know about our 10 graduate programmes and our 5 summer internships. We also think there is nothing worse than people representing companies at careers fairs who are a bit "flat" when you talk to them.
So, we kicked things off with a fun training session including a stand-up comedian and a hot-seat exercise to help learn about what the other graduates do. We have crammed their brains full and they are all looking forward to it! If you come to us, we might not be able to make you laugh but we are all approachable and should be able to answer any questions you might have.
Freebies!!
We don't want to just give you "stuff" for the sake of it, it's wasteful and that's just not how we roll at Standard Life (check our corporate responsibility pages if you don't believe me). So we are going for something useful, namely pens. Not just any pens though. We have normal Standard Life biros and we also have our much coveted "Standard Life Star Highlighters" a.k.a. the only highlighter you need this season. It works for us as it's useful and is 1 bit of plastic instead of 5. It works for you as its 5 different colours of highlighter in a star-shape. Think of how much this will cheer you up as you slave into the wee hours in the library!
Skills Sessions
We also have a number of presentations booked in for this term. Last year, we did the usual thing. In with the suits, the official-looking PowerPoint, loads of company information and scare the bejeezus out of the students. Then we realised... if we were bored giving this type of presentation by the time we had done 20 of them, what must it be like to suffer in the audience?
This year, it's all about "Skills Sessions". Informal, insider, tricks-of-the-trade, hint and tips on the whole graduate recruitment process. It's way more fun for us, interactive for you and the stuff we talk about is helpful and relevant whether you are applying for one of our jobs or not.
Obviously we hope that you will though! We are really hoping to make them a big success story and we welcome contact from Bright Futures societies on how we both can work together on publicising them. Or you can book in new ones through your society if we are not coming there already. Feel free to get in touch with us. www.standardlife.com/careers/graduates

Firstly, it was great to meet a number of you at the London event in September. We hope that you enjoyed our session and took something away from it (apart from a few KitKats!)
Nestlé have been involved in a number of initiatives this month including a skills session which we ran for Edinburgh Bright Futures members. The group exercise saw teams of students develop their commercial awareness and unleash their creative side. The task set was to develop a new product idea and also gave them a few handy hints on how to survive group exercises at assessment centres. Further events are scheduled throughout the next few months, including one with Strathclyde Bright Futures.
Finally we would like to extend our congratulations to the following Bright Futures societies, who following the submission of their initial proposals have been short listed as finalists for this year’s Nestlé Partnership Fund;
- Aston
- Edinburgh
- Birmingham
- Leicester
- Strathclyde
Good luck with your pitches......
