e-Newsletter EXTRA November 2009

Welcome to the November e-Newsletter!

As we bid a fond farewell to 2009 it seems as though everything should be winding, but there is no rest for the wicked for the Bright Futures network!  Activity is relentless with students hammering out applications for top grad jobs and others hunting down the best internships and placements on offer. Our Corporate Investors are working their socks off to provide members with all the essential information that they need to make the right career choices, hence the huge variety of events on offer.

Graduates are going to great lengths to ensure that they land a fantastic job, so our ‘interesting news’ section is dedicated to one grad who didn’t wait around for an opportunity to come to him. For those of you who (like me) are filled with terror at the thought of sitting ‘Psychometric Tests’ including numerical and verbal reasoning (which I thought I’d left far behind me when I left school) see the article by one of our committee members who found the ultimate solution to passing these tests.

Enjoy the e-Newsletter, have a wonderful Christmas break and we will be back with another great edition in the New Year – see you then.

Interesting News

Graduate has taken on the credit crunch blues and won by finding 50 DIFFERENT JOBS in 50 WEEKS by becoming everything from a TV weatherman to a New York stockbroker.

Dan Seddiqui embarked on the unusual job hunt after failing to find a position despite finishing an economics degree at university.

The former financial analyst, 27, was left £94,000 in debt and without a roof over his head after failing to find work despite having 40 interviews. The situation became so bad that his worried parents even sent him for counselling to try and find out why he couldn't find a job.
But the Californian put faith in the famous American Dream and decided to travel across the United States, visiting each state for one week to try his hand at a different role.

His belief was soon rewarded and he has done everything from working as a petroleum engineer in Texas to being a syrup processor in Vermont.
When Dan visited Tennessee he found work as a music studio technician and became a stockbroker in New York.
And he has also worked as a lobster catcher, a jazz conductor, TV weatherman in Ohio and even a Las Vegas wedding planner.
But it's not been all work and no play as Dan managed to bag himself 40 DATES while working his way around the US too!

(Here he is as a weatherman in Ohio..)

He said of his journey: "I couldn't even afford to buy food sometimes, and I just thought enough was enough."

"Initially when I approached companies with my idea they voiced a lot of concerns about training and safety issues, but I eventually wore everybody down. And now everyone seems really pleased that I went on this trip and tried so many different jobs, even my parents."

His experiences have also allowed him to work out what he likes — and dislikes — doing.

He added: "My favourite job was probably as a bartender in Louisiana in the middle of Mardi Gras. I got to meet so many great people."
"My least favourite was trying to be a lobster-man. I learned that I got very seasick, and that lobsters do a lot of pinching."

So far Dan has earned nearly £38,000 from his experiment and plans to publish a book on his experiences next year.
He is also hoping to develop his project in a reality TV show.
As for a career, Dan fancies becoming a dietician — a job that he did for a week in Mississippi.

  • Student Case Study

How the ‘X-Factor’ helped me pass online tests and got me, my perfect job!

I wanted to be a banker since I was two – ok, maybe this is an exaggeration, but still I wake up every morning and go to be bed every night dreaming about my glamorous City job. And things are going well apart for one little problem – stupid online reasoning test – they were definitely created to ruin my life.

I mean I spent hours and hours on my perfect application form, making sure I ticked all the boxes and then it happened – I got an invitation to take online numerical and verbal test – oh my god… So first time, I just launched into it and surprise, surprise I failed. I never even got to meet those people who I convinced myself were the best people for me to work with.

So next time I decided to be smart (I mean they are predicting me a high 2.1 for a reason) – so I asked this super genius boy to do my test and I said in return I would go for a drink with him! The ‘drink’ was an absolute pain as the guy could not talk about anything else but maths; my agony was compounded when this most cute interviewer told me that I did amazingly well at the interview, but unfortunately as I did not pass the written test he has to reject my application, but ‘nothing personal’.

Okay, this was nothing personal to him, but it was so painful and horrible for me – I mean, I am clever, good with people, have the right examples for the interview questions, I just can’t do the stupid reasoning tests.

So I sat there and cried and cried and cried and then a friend of mine suggested that these days there is no problem that Google does not have a solution for.
So, I googled everything from committing a suicide to numerical tests, and alleluia I went on the Bright Futures website and on the homepage there was a link to this website called gradintel , where you can practise online reasoning tests for free as many times as you like, and you know what practise makes!

You can also use the service to build your online Bright Futures Profile and get matched to jobs from the best employers. So I practiced the tests for a week and could feel my confidence grow, it is like being on X-factor and getting better every week! I finally took the tests for real to complete my Bright Futures Profile and then, guess what, I got another invitation to sit online tests for this bank where I really wanted to work all the time.

But this time I was cool: no rush, no cheating, I got it right and landed my perfect job. So if you are stuck with the tests, I suggest you get online and practice on gradintel and you will make it happen – come on if celebrity dancers can perform all those twists and turns on Strictly Come Dancing, surely you can pass a reasoning test?

You just need gradintel as your professional coach and if you are a member of the Bright Futures Society http://www.bright-futures.org.uk/ you get automatic use of this great software to take these tests and build your Bright Futures Profile. Good luck.

In October we had workshops on psychometric tests with GradIntel, commercial awareness with Deloitte and career planning with OnTrack International. Loughborough Bright Futures Students are off to a flying start thanks too generous support from Accenture!

We have already been visited by CIMA, Deloitte and L’Oreal, all strong numbers of client turnout; and as a result strongly promoting both the nPower and L’Oreal competitions for this 2009/10. Both competitions are attracting massive interest, and we have plans for entering both competitions with a Committee team, and aim to get pretty far.

On the 23rd November we hosted an event with The College of Law which went really well, considering Loughborough societies was started up this year; and on the 9th of December look out for the event Unilever. At this event we will have a new potential sponsor by Babcock, so we are aiming to impress them!

Next term will see the Loughborough final of the L’Oreal competition with a judging panel composing some members of Bright Futures, L’Oreal, hopefully our sponsor Accenture, and the university marketing team.

We also plan to do a employability session with PWC, and a placement based talk looking at the corporate side and the students side with Rate my Placement and Ernst and Young.

Finally we are looking to do a Bright Futures reunion conference just before Easter after all the new committee’s are organised with a turn out from the Bright Futures national team... hopefully!
