After collaborating with Loughborough Careers Service and delivering some employability-related activites with students on campus, we now have a committee who are ready to kick off activity this summer! Rebecca Lomas is organising the Bright Futures troops in Loughborough and they have already started preparing their propsal!

Thanks so much to Adeola, Rebecca and James for assisting me on the careers stand and well done for signing up over 40 members!

BRIGHT FUTURES REMINDERS (Cont...)

Well done to those members who registered for this new and exciting graduate career matching service.  A large number of tags have already been sent to those registered Bright Futures members in the last two months.    If you have registered and have yet to receive a tag, it could mean that you need to do some more work on your profile.  Profiles which are less than 30% complete are less likely to be tagged for jobs than more complete profiles.  When you get a break from your exams, spend a bit of time updating your profile. The most popular search elements used by our employers are currently:

  • 1.       Degree subject linked to predicted or actual result
  • 2.       UCAS points score
  • 3.       Previous education
  • 4.       Work and Life experience
  • 5.       The results of our numerical and verbal ability assessments

SOCIETY NEWS (cont...)

  • Manchester Bright Futures

After gaining the full backing of the Careers Service we are just waiting for the Students Union to ratify our proposal, unfortunately it seems red tape is slowing the process as the decision has been put back on numerous occasions. However we are still extremely confident and have a good network of corporate companies to hit the ground running next year.

We are currently looking for first and second year students to hand over to and once we have achieved this, believe we are perfectly placed to deliver the full benefits a Bright Futures society can offer in 2009/10.

  • Swansea Bright Futures

Nominees will be pitching for the positions they want shortly, and then anyone who is a Bright Futures member will be able to vote for who they want to see running their committee next year.

The Student Union Society Awards are on the 7th June and Swansea Bright Futures are up for… SIX AWARDS!

Swansea Bright Futures and the Swansea Business Show

The Swansea Business Show was held on Friday 15th May, where small businesses gathered to put up a united front in an attempt to beat the credit crunch. It was the first-ever Swansea Business Show and was held by the Local Business Forum at the Dylan Thomas Theatre, Swansea.

Almost 50 businesses from a wide range of sectors attended the show, from Photography to Fire Safety, Cleaning services to HR Consultants, including the student organisations Bright Futures and SIFE. All of which were attempting to sell or work with visitors and other exhibitors.

The organiser Mike Leahy, works as a sales and marketing consultant as well as running the Local Business Forum and UniBus. He is passionate about helping small businesses, especially through the recession, which drove him to organise such an event. “Connecting people, supporting and promoting each other is a sure-fire route to success, and that’s what I work towards on a daily basis.” Mike and Swansea Bright Futures have worked together closely in the past, getting involved with the organisation and running of the very successful Dinner With Industry event in March, as well as inviting Bright Futures along to all the UniBus events throughout the past year.

These events enabled us to deliver presentations to all attendees and increase awareness amongst local businesses in hope to work with them in the future.  Mike was keen to get assistance for the Swansea Business Show, and so asked the Swansea Bright Futures committee for their support. Combining with SIFE (Students in Free Enterprise), we managed to round up 12 volunteers to help out throughout the day. Tasks included registration and set-up assistance, managing the car parking area and guiding people to the venue, as well as liaising with all the companies and ensuring everyone was happy.

Throughout the day there was plenty of opportunity to mingle with the companies attending and we managed to secure over 20 contacts, many of which are keen to work with us in the future. The event was a brilliant success for all attending and next year’s show is already on the agenda. Working with local people and businesses is very rewarding, and every little bit of assistance Bright Futures can offer is so greatly appreciated, especially during the economic downfall.

We questioned is this a generalisation?  …We think not!
