e-Newsletter EXTRA March 2010
Letter form the Editor
It’s true what people say, that ‘time flies when you’re having fun’ but looking across my desk and seeing the month of March on the front of the calendar, it’s apparent that the same can be said about working day and night so the deadlines aren’t missed.
This month has seen a large number of internships and graduate opportunities available from many of our partnering companies. Reckitt Benckiser even set up live interviews on a number of campuses to get the best talent. This goes to show that many companies really understand the value of a graduate.
It’s also that time of the year for the handover of the society to the new committee teams, and this month’s ‘Student Success Story’ shows the employability ‘X factor’; you get by being part of the committee team.
Finally I’m delighted to say that many students are making their own success story, thanks to the Haiti’s Business Heroes campaign, we have two business ideas launched by our very own BF committee members, find out more in the Reminders section of their upcoming events.
Tip of the month- study outside so you can enjoy the sun while we still have it!

Folding plug wins design of the year prize
Admittedly, it's more a frustration than a matter of life and death, but it is true all the same: British plugs are awkwardly big. Tonight a graduate who became fed up with carrying round the world's thinnest laptop with what felt like the world's biggest plug won a leading design contest with his simple solution.
Min-Kyu Choi has invented the folding plug, which could replace the clunky three-pin British plug that has changed little since its inception in 1946.
His design beat off impressive competition from across the world – an eclectic mix that included fashion, newspapers, aircraft and flatpack furniture – to win the Brit Insurance design of the year award. He won a trophy and the title but, of course, it could now be much more. "It works, it looks good and I'm sure it will make him a wealthy man if it is marketed right," said Deyan Sudjic, director of the Design Museum, which organises the awards
"He's showing that design can be about doing everyday simple things really well and in this case transform something that is universal and brutally ugly."
Sudjic said it was one of those things that made you immediately wonder why it hadn't been done before. "There has been a lot of froth around and this reminds us what good design is all about: it's about doing things intelligently."
South Korean-born Choi, who graduated from his MA design course at the Royal College of Art in London last year, was spurred by his annoyance at having to use a heavyweight British plug with his ultra-light MacBook Air laptop. His irritation was compounded when the plug scratched his prized machine while he was travelling. On his YouTube video Choi said: "When people carry laptops with the UK plugs in a bag, it always causes problems such as tearing paper or scratching laptop surfaces and sometimes it will break other stuff."
He said the traditional three-pin plug had not been designed with mobility in mind. "I've tried to make it much thinner and safer," he said.
Choi's ingenious design is less than a centimetre thick when folded. "It only needs two simple actions – turning the main pins and opening the cover."
Artist Antony Gormley, who chaired this year's judging panel, called the invention thought-through, responsive and modest. "The folding plug shows how intelligent, elegant and inventive design can make a difference to everyone's life," he said.
The plug and all the shortlisted designs will be on display at the Design Museum, London SE1, until 31 October.

We love Reckitt Benckiser
The BF team are very attached to RB as we work with them both as part of the society and as a recruitment client. Having worked with them for the last 5 years we have got to know their business well and as a partnership both businesses have benefitted from working together.
Although very few of us will know the name RB we will all know their big name brands like Finish, Vanish, Cillit Bang, Dettol and Nurofen. In fact we defy anyone not to have at least one RB product at home!
Their ability to integrate innovation across the business including effective use of social media on Facebook, Twitter and Blogs and a constant range of new products on the shelves is something we can all learn from.
They continue to challenge the market not only with their product innovation but also with their attraction recruitment. Following the success of their Finish Next Generation Dishwashing Product Facebook Competition, their support of the Business Heroes drive and the recruitment of 5 Brand Managers this month we are looking forward to what they will do next.

Frazer, Loughborough University student, Placement year with PricewaterhouseCoopers studying ACA
What is a typical day’s work on your placement?
“The majority of time I am based out of the office at a client’s site. I have dealt with a variety of clients in numerous industries, and have been performing their statutory audits. As a first year student the typical activities I perform include auditing cash, fixed assets or operating expenses. This requires a great deal of interaction with the client and the majority of my day spent analysing data and gathering evidence.”
What would your words of advice be for anyone considering a career in chartered accountancy?
“Gaining the ACA will put you head and shoulders above other applicants when it comes to applying for higher profile jobs. Although I am required to gain it for audit, eventually I am looking to become a Finance Director of a FTSE 100 company and so the ACA stands me in good stead for this.”
Please visit The ICAEW website for more information. Find all the available opportunities, both for graduate roles and internships on Training Vacancies
We are also on facebook, so keep in touch.

What’s it like to be a graduate in Centrica? Ask Tom!
Tom Szwed
IS - Service Desk Process Analyst
Computer Sciences and IT – University of Brighton
BA (Hons) Business Information Systems
My week’s holiday was great, but upon my return back to work, it really struck me just how deeply involved graduates can get in the Information Systems department here at Centrica! I’ve got over 100 unread emails in my Inbox, 3 voicemails to listen to and a colourful selection of post it notes on my desk. The Graduate Team who look after you ensure that you find real work placements that are aligned with your areas of interest but also help you to develop your skills both on a technical and personal level.
Upon arriving at Centrica I found myself parachuting into the world of Business Intelligence (BI), which is all about delivering the analytics and management information that allows us to make effective strategic decisions and drive out a competitive edge from our fellow energy rivals. Since joining the team I have learnt several modelling techniques to design business data solutions, developed interactive management reports in a cutting edge reporting tool and have also assumed responsibility for managing the work of a small software development team who make changes to one of our key BI systems.
I must admit I didn’t think graduates got this involved at Centrica, but I soon realised there is so much on offer to help you make a flying start to an IS career here at Centrica. I really have and I’m enjoying my work greatly, and on my next holiday I’ll remember to turn my ‘out of office’ on!

Universities go HEAD 2 HEAD for the Q Factor with Qedis
On Wednesday 24th, Nottingham and Loughborough will compete with UCL and LSE at the Q factor presentation at Qedis headquarters in London. A 15 minute presentation on our mission statement, as well as how a company such as Qedis might attract top graduates will be followed by a 10 minute question and answer session with Heads of Resourcing, Recruitment, Bright Futures and other high ranking members of Qedis.
This exciting opportunity is being billed as very similar to a “First Round Job Interview” except it’s with the people who can give you a job, just like that!
Competition will be fierce, but the Nottingham, Loughborough clash is likely to be huge with the Midlands title to play for!
GetUpOrPay.com is a new website that aims to help people reduce the amount of time they waste sleeping. Perfect for students :)
How it works:
You set the times you'd like to wake up on the website for the next 7 days and pay a deposit of your choice via PayPal. If you don't log in on time each day you lose your deposit giving you an incentive to get up! Don't have any money? Ask your parents to do it for you. The trouble with students is that although they know over sleeping negatively effects their work they have no immediate incentive to get up in the morning.
GetUpOrPay provide the immediate incentive of money, ensuring you get up in the morning no matter what. They also have an optional 'Hardcore' setting that aims to help stop you going back to sleep after you wake up and 'Day Off' settings for special circumstances (student parties basically). *All profits from the site will go to the Haiti Fund.
We've already had successful results with the website in which students gained more time to complete their coursework.
Thomas Edison is famous for sleeping as little as 3 / 4 hours each day. Perhaps you could join him?
The duration you use the site for is optional however if you complete more than 8 weeks using the GetUpOrPay service and you'll receive a certificate, something extra to add to the old C.V.!
Add more hours to your day, give it a try.

University College of London Society News
It has been a pleasure working with Bright Futures for the past year. The organization has played a significant role in enhancing the business society's stature in the UCL campus for its 1st year in existence.
One example would be the number of new corporate partners we made during the national committee trainning event. This explains our stellar rise as a small society to one of the biggest in campus.
This year, we are the 4th biggest society out of 162 and this was in no small part due to our partnership with Bright Futures. The new committee are extremely competent, and i believe that through continued strong relationships with Bright Futures, our society will rise to new heights in the coming year!

The highlight of this term was holding our case study event with Deloitte in February. The session included information on the company and jobs available, but the main point of interest was a business case study, where Bright Futures members had to identify the key points in the given business proposal, ways in which Deloitte could help them and therefore which service line would be the most useful in this given scenario. I feel it gave everyone valuable experience in breaking down work-related tasks and it was also fun as we all worked together!
We are currently receiving emails from students hoping to be on the committee, with a view to handing over at the beginning of next term. Good luck to all new committees who are coming in, this year has been great and being on the Bright Futures committee has been an invaluable experience.
